Lot Essay

Frederic, Lord Leighton, exhibited a painting of this subject at the Royal Academy in 1871. In the early part of his career, Dicksee executed a series of illustrations en grisaille, in a similar style to the present drawing. In 1884 he was working on Cassell's Romeo and Juliet.
